Tonight we practiced again for a couple of hours, basically just ran through the songs one last time and had a goofy time. Josh is basically like every other drummer I’ve worked with, meaning he plays too loud and rushes things when he’s excited. I had a good time teasing him about it, and he took it like a man. Later, I got into something and was playing so hard I was overpowering Logan’s guitar, so he got to make fun of me too. “Yeah, see, you’re playing too loud!”
Later we all sat down off to the side in the couches in the youth room and sort of talked about the church, its direction and how we sort of fit in to things. As time rolled on it got later and suddenly it was time to leave, so we cut off the lights and walked out. Logan and I stood in the parking lot getting eaten alive by ants, mosquitoes and every other animal within a mile that thought humans sounded tasty tonight, talking about everything from our ideal visions for contemporary worship to the nature and form of Grace, how to communicate that Grace to people, etc. We talked about where we’ve been, our struggles with the vices that have been particular problems in our lives, etc. We really connected, and I think I’ve found a really close, Christian friend, even if he is nearly a decade younger than me. Whoever said age was a barrier? More than once during our conversation I remarked on how mature and secure in his faith he is for his age. Very cool dude.
Anyway, since it bears on what he and I and the rest of the guys talked about tonight, tomorrow you can expect an article on corporate worship, evangelism, teaching and the purpose of the Church as defined by the Bible. Should be a good one, and I might even end up making people mad again.
